Hi Panda: A Fresh Display Font for Playful Brand Identities

It started with a blank artboard and a brief from a client I really connected with—a small, plant-based café looking to refresh their visual identity. They wanted something warm, inviting, and just a little quirky. As I began sketching out possible logo directions, I remembered a font I’d recently downloaded: Hi Panda. It’s a raw and unfiltered display font that’s both cute and original. I hadn’t had a chance to use it in a real project yet, so this felt like the perfect opportunity to test it in the wild.

Hi Panda immediately stood out for its handcrafted feel. It’s not polished in the way many digital fonts are—it has a bit of a wobble, some subtle imperfections that give it character. The letterforms are rounded and soft, with a slightly bouncy baseline that adds to its playful personality. It feels like someone drew each letter with a bit of personality and heart, which is exactly what my café client was going for.

Testing Hi Panda in Logo Design

My first test was a simple logo mockup. I set the café’s name in Hi Panda and paired it with a clean sans serif for the tagline. The contrast worked beautifully. Hi Panda gave the logo a friendly, approachable tone, while the sans serif grounded it with a sense of professionalism. I was surprised at how well it held up at different sizes. Even at smaller scales, like on a business card or a social media profile, the letters remained legible and charming.

That said, Hi Panda is definitely best used as a display font or headline font. It’s not meant for long paragraphs or body copy, which makes sense given its expressive nature. But for logos, headlines, and short-form brand text, it’s a standout choice.

Bringing It Into the Full Brand System

Once the client approved the logo direction, I began applying Hi Panda across the rest of the brand system. I used it on packaging mockups for coffee sleeves and takeaway boxes. It looked great on a chalkboard-style menu and worked surprisingly well in digital formats too—like on the homepage hero section of their new website and in Instagram story templates.

One thing I noticed was how Hi Panda influenced brand perception. It gave the café a youthful, creative edge without feeling childish or unprofessional. In fact, the font’s authenticity and charm helped reinforce the brand’s commitment to natural, handmade, and locally sourced ingredients. It wasn’t just a design choice—it became part of the storytelling.

Practical Design Observations

As with any expressive font, there are some practical considerations when using Hi Panda. I found that it worked best when given enough space to breathe. Cramped lettering made the design feel cluttered, especially in all-caps settings. I also made sure to limit its use to key brand touchpoints—like logos, social media headers, and signage—while relying on a more neutral typeface for supporting text and longer descriptions.

Another thing I tested was color contrast. Hi Panda looked especially vibrant in warm pastels and earthy tones, which aligned with the café’s eco-friendly vibe. It also held up well in black-and-white print materials, like business cards and flyers, where its texture and rhythm really came through.

Font Pairing Tips

When it came to pairing Hi Panda with other fonts, I leaned toward simplicity. A clean sans serif like Montserrat or Lato worked well for secondary text, creating a nice balance between playful and professional. I also experimented with a light serif for some editorial-style layouts, which added a touch of elegance without clashing with Hi Panda’s personality.

The key with Hi Panda is not to overdo it. Because it’s so expressive, it shines brightest when used as an accent or focal point rather than across the entire design. Think of it like a statement piece in a room—let it stand out, but keep the rest of the elements simple and supportive.

What to Check Before Using Hi Panda in Client Work

Before finalizing the brand system, I double-checked a few technical details that are important when using any font commercially. Hi Panda comes in standard OpenType format and includes basic alternates and ligatures. It supports a wide range of languages, which was a plus since the café had a diverse customer base.

I also made sure to review the licensing terms. The font is available for commercial use, which meant I could confidently include it in both digital and print deliverables. If you're working with clients, always confirm that the font license allows for commercial deployment and redistribution, especially if you're providing files for print or web use.

Final Thoughts on Using Hi Panda

By the end of the project, Hi Panda had become a core part of the café’s visual identity. It showed up in everything from the storefront sign to social media posts, and even in the thank-you notes on packaging. It gave the brand a cohesive, recognizable voice that felt both personal and professional.

If you're working on a branding project that calls for a fresh, expressive typeface, Hi Panda is definitely worth testing. It’s a display font that brings warmth, originality, and a touch of whimsy to any creative project. Just remember to use it thoughtfully, pair it wisely, and always test it across formats before locking in the final design.
